Antarctica packing checklist
Pack for wind, spray and fast-changing conditions—not extreme cold alone. A flexible layering system and reliable waterproof protection matter more than bringing one very heavy coat.
The short answer
Confirm what your operator provides before buying anything. Many expedition programs lend waterproof boots or include an expedition parka, but policies, sizes and return rules vary by operator and sailing.
Use a moisture-managing base layer, an insulating mid-layer and a waterproof outer layer. Multiple lighter combinations adapt better to changing activity and weather than one bulky outfit.
Wind and wet conditions often affect comfort first. Bring warm gloves plus a waterproof outer option, a close-fitting hat, a neck gaiter and suitable socks. Confirm the ship's boot policy.
A small waterproof daypack or dry bag helps protect spare layers and electronics during Zodiac transfers. Sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen and lip protection remain important around snow, ice and water.
Cold conditions reduce battery performance. Bring spare batteries, memory cards, charging cables and simple weather protection. Keep enough distance from wildlife and follow expedition-team instructions.
Checked luggage can be delayed. Carry passports, travel documents, essential medication, one change of clothing and the items you cannot begin the expedition without.
Formal clothing is rarely the priority on expedition ships, though onboard style varies. Avoid overpacking duplicates and do not bring drones or specialist equipment without checking operator rules and destination restrictions.
